Ondo Former Works Commissioner, Adegbenro Urges Nigerians To Imbibe Spirit Of Sportsmanship

Engr. Gboye Adegbenro, the former Commissioner for Works and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state, has stressed the need for Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in their daily activities, saying “this is the only way we can build an enduring society that we all aspired to have.”

Adegbenro, while speaking on Tuesday as a Special Guest of Honour at the Annual Inter-House Sports Competition of Anglican Grammar School, Ero, Ifedore Local Government Area of the state said the spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by the students of the school had shown that sports is vital to the unity and development of the country.

The former Works Commissioner and deputy governorship candidate of the ZLP in the 2020 Ondo state governorship election, who was represented by his Media Aide, Mr. Kunle Ajibogun said, “I want to urge Nigerians to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship in their daily endeavours, it pays and brings unity.

“Sports has also continue to be an aspect of human endeavour that deals with mental and physical well being of humanity or recreational. Sports has also been a source of livelihood of some, through creation of jobs and these areas we talk of professionalism. By so doing, involving in sporting events is competitive, endurance, spirit of team and managing success.”

In her welcome address, Mrs. Folasade Adegbenro, the Principal of the school, said for the past six years, such event has not come up due to one reason or the other but thanked the Almighty God who had put this in the mind of those that matters in education sector of the state to direct principals in organising a befitting inter-house sports competition at their various school.

“I will like to further emphasize that such a sporting activities, students should always put into consideration the spirit of participation in the games and not the winning house,” she said.

Mrs. Adegbenro, therefore, implored the house masters and house mistress of each house to watch over their house members so as to be well behave during and after the event.

The Principal of the school, who also advised parents to spend hugely on the education of their children said they are the future leaders of tomorrow and quality education is the only and lasting legacy they can give to them.

She, however, called on the state government to put more efforts at developing sports activities across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.
