A retiree collapsed at the entrance of the Kano State Government House as pensioners protested the non-payment of their retirement benefit in the state.

The pensioners were holding a peaceful protest in the state to draw the attention of the authority to their plight.

The protesters marched from the Emir’s House in Nassarawa to the state government house.

Speaking at the protest, the leader of the procession, Kano NLC Chairman, Kabiru Ado Minjibir, while calling on the attention of the state governor said, “We are calling on organisations which include Ministry for Local Government, SUBEB, SPHCMB, Water Board and Housing Cooperation to fully comply with the provisions of section 7(1) a & b, (2), (3) and 8 a,b,c,d of the Kano State Pension and Gratuity Law Law No.1 of 2007) 1427 A.H by remitting the full employers 17% contributions to the Pension Fund Trustees henceforth as complied and remitted by the mainstream Civil Service under the office of the Head of Civil Service and some Parastatals such as Judiciary.

“This non-remittance by some defaulting organisations immensely contributed to the current crisis in the pension administration in the state. Your Excellency may wish to note that the current outstanding retirees benefit in the state as of June 2022 stands at N36,971,782,088.79 while the unremitted 17% contributions from defaulting organisations stand at N69,257,961,597.98 although the Congress is fully aware this figure cut across three successive administrations from April 2006 to August 2022 which comprises the tenure of His Excellency Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the present administration of His Excellency.”

He, therefore, called on all defaulting MDA’s on the remittance of 17% Monthly Contributions to immediately start full remittance from September 2022.

On his part, the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje represented by his Chief of Staff and Head of Service, Usman Bala who received the procession pledged the government’s quick intervention on the issue.

“We have already gathered all the required information concerning the outstanding amount for the pension and gratuity and we are currently in talks with different organisations to find ways to source the money.

“We have a committee working on this which I chair. The reason behind the non-remittance could be attributed to the fact that at various periods and times in the history of our state and the country, the nation has faced some financial challenges and impediments and this is the reason why some of these institutions are unable to run it as a result of paucity of funds. I want to reaffirm this government focus on payment of monthly salaries to workers unfailingly,” he said.
