Obokun East LCDA Chairman’s Wife Distributes Gift Items To Pregnant Women

To further enhance comfortability of the pregnant women in the council area, the wife of Obokun East Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Ilare Ijesha, in Osun state, Mrs Adejoke Itunu Bello, on Thursday distributed gifts item to selected pregnant women across all the wards in the council area.

The event which took place at the council Secretariat, in Ilare-Ijesha, also featured lecture on Female Genital Mutilation.

Speaking at the 2 in 1 program, the council’s first lady, Mrs Joke Bello, said the gesture was born out of her passion to cater for the well-being of the women, most especially the pregnant ones; and also to call for collective effort in fighting against female circumcision.

According to her, the material given to the pregnant women is part of the resolve of the present administration in the council area to take care of the yet unborn baby.

She noted that, the gesture will in a no small measure assist the pregnant women in preparing for the unborn babies.

Speaking on the need for all and sundry to collectively fight female circumcision in the society, Mrs Bello stressed that the idea of female circumcision is primitive, barbaric and has no any advantage, hence, it causes more damages for the female child.

Enumerating the adverse effects of Female Genital Mutilation, Mrs Bello said, the exercise, if not eradicated, causes VVF which is also know as fistula, that makes female private part links with uterus, which could lead to stoppage of urine.

She added that, FGM can also lead to barrenness and lost of interest in intercourse with their spouses.

She urged the nursing mothers to desist from circumcising their female children, in the interest of their future.

Delivering a lecture on the effects of Female Genital Mutilation, the Director of Primary Health Care Board in Obokun local government, Mrs Juliana Owomoyela, attributed the increase in female circumcision to the lack of knowledge by the nursing mothers.

She said incessant awareness is needed to let the mothers know the adverse effect of the said practice.

Mrs Owomoyela, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Primary Health Care Board, Mrs Opawuyi Balikis, noted that, it’s erroneous belief that, any female child that does not get circumcised would be fornicating around; saying, such insinuation should be dis-countenanced.

Opawuyi said, it’s high time for all the nursing mothers join hands together with the government in fighting the menace, as it’s doing more harms to the society than good.

Some beneficiaries of the program, including Mrs Funke Adeniyi and Rukayat Olanrewaju, eulogised the strides of the wife of the chairman, Mrs Joke Bello for the gesture and opportunity accorded them to get sensitised on the need to desist from female child circumcision.

They prayed God for successful tenure of the chairman, Obokun East LCDA and the governor of the state, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola.

The event also witnessed award given to the six outstanding staff of the LCDA by the caretaker chairman of the council, Hon. Bello Saliu Bamidele and Christmas packages for Yeyesemure, women leaders, Iyalojas and youth leaders in the five wards as well as the wives of political appointees by the wife of the chairman

Pregnant women across all the wards in Obokun East LCDA smiled home with gift items, including packs of baby bath and cash donations.
