20 Killed, Seven Injured In Bauchi Road Crashes
No fewer than 20 people have reportedly died while seven others sustained various injuries in multiple crashes that occurred on Sunday night.
Confirming the accident to newsmen on Monday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, said the separate crashes which occurred 30 minutes apart were caused by overspeeding.
He said that the first crash which involved two vehicles, an 18-seater Toyota Hummer bus and a trailer, occurred at about 7.00pm, at Bambal Village along Kano-Jama’are highway.
He added that the 18-seater bus collided with a trailer with the license plate: MAD710XA before going up into flames while the passengers were burnt beyond recognition.
He stated that the crash involved a Volkswagen Golf car driven by one Abubakar Haruna and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle adding that it is also caused by speed violation and overloading.
“The problem is speed, they don’t drive within the approved speed limits. It is very unfortunate. The crashes were caused by a speed violation.
“We call on drivers to avoid overloading and overloading. They should also observe road traffic rules and regulations so that lives and properties that are lost in these crashes will be minimized.”
He said further that the victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Azare, for confirmation and treatment, where a medical doctor confirmed the 20 dead.
