UNIOSUN Mourns Immediate Past Provost Of SET, Professor Akinola, Describes His Death As Tragic

The Management of Osun State University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola received with shock, the passing of the immediate past Provost of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Professor Samson Ranti Akinola.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Ademola Adesoji, stated that the UNIOSUN community received the sudden demise of Professor Samson Akinola on Saturday, 3rd of April, 2021 with shock and disbelief, adding that he died when his wealth of experience was most needed in proffering solutions to the current climate change and global warming in the world.

Professor Samson Ranti Akinola was a professor of Urban and Regional Planning with specialization in Environmental Planning and Community Development from the perspective of policy/institutional Analysis with vision and interests in problem solving entrepreneurship.

Professor Akinola obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) (Hons.) from the then University of Ife, (Now Obafemi Awolowo University) Masters of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Urban and Regional Planning (URP) in the same University in 1987, 1991 and 1997 respectively. He joined the services of Osun State University as Associate Professor on the 31st of August, 2012 and has held series of leadership roles in the University such as; Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences; Ag. Head of Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Team Leader for the preparation of Master Plan for each Campus of the University; Provost of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology among others.

He was a fully registered member of Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC), Member of Nigeria Institute of Town Planners (MNITP) and other international organizations such as International Sociological Association (ISA), Madrid, Spain; The council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar, Senegal; Development Policy Management Forum (DPMF), Nairobi, Kenya among others.

The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Council, Management, Staff and Students of Osun State University thereby commiserates with the entire Akinola family, Offa land, UNIOSUN, State of Osun, Kwara State, and Nigeria at large on the loss of this great scholar, humanist par excellence and pray that his gentle soul will rest in perfect peace
