Members of the Pen profession have been urged not to promote anyone fanning embers of discord in the country, and that they should avoid spiteful headlines and ramble rousers with ulterior motives, .
Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Bashiru representing Osun Central at the National Assembly made this known at the Courtesy call paid to him by the executive members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ Osun Chapter, at his Constituency Office in Osogbo, the state capital of Osun.
The Senator who is the Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity collaborated the association, he also charged the women journalists on professionalism of factual news and shunning misinformation, he said that the time has come for the body to partner relevant stakeholders to create policies and laws that will guide against fake news and misinforming the society.
Senator Bashiru called out for Unity and development, saying that there is need for Unity to be promoted, he added that those beating the drums of war have ulterior intent against the country, he stressed that no matter the challenges on infrastructure deficiency, technology challenges, security or inequality among others, going to war is not the remedy.
Citing experience of countries that have experienced war such as Sudan, Mali, Niger, Liberia among others, he hinged that experience in Africa shows that falsehood, baseless agitation on human course in the event of war, has negative effect on the masses more than the elites, He maintained that war is not the solution to Nigerias’ challenges.
The Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity also charged the Women Journalists not to be pessimistic about engaging in the political process, but to get involved in it confidently, he described it as part of civic process in ensuring that the people do not end up being ruled by those who can’t contribute positively to the development of the states and country at large.
Earlier in her address, the Osun State Chairperson for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, Mrs Motunrayo Ayegbayo commended the Senator for giving qualitative representation of his Constituency, she also lauded him for being gender friendly and for his successful community engagement programs, she also congratulated him on his two-year in senate and impactful scorescard.
She emphasized that the association which is an advocate for information, women, children, development among others has its beam on activities for the benefit of the people, and will not rest on its oars as it fulfils its obligation to the society.
She added that as intermediary between the government and the people, it’s programmes and duties will always be factual and promotes developments.
At the courtesy visit paid to Senator Ajibola Bashiru at his Constituency Office, was the member Osun House of Assembly representating Osogbo state constituency, Hon Taofeek Badamosi and other executive members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ Osun Chapter.
