Buhari Government Must Ensure Release Of Abducted University Of Abuja Lecturers – Civic Group, SERAP
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari government to ensure the safe return of the abducted staff members of the University of Abuja and their family members.
Taking to its Twitter handle on Tuesday, the advocacy organisation warned that the Nigerian government would be held to account if the demand was not met.
It further stated that the Nigerian government must immediately ensure a safe school environment for students and tutors alike citing the country’s endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration.
The SERAP tweet reads, “The Buhari administration must ensure the safe return of the abducted two professors, one senior lecturer and three family members today from the staff quarters of the University of Abuja.
“We’ll hold @NigeriaGov to account if those abducted are not urgently rescued.
“Nigerian authorities must locate and ensure the safe release of these lecturers and their family members. Authorities must ensure a safe school environment for students and teachers.
“Nigeria has endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, a political agreement committing countries to a range of measures aimed at strengthening prevention and response related to attacks on students, teachers, and schools.
“By doing so, Nigeria committed to using the Guidelines for Protecting Schools and Universities from any form of attack.”
Gunmen reportedly attacked the UNIABUJA staff quarters on Tuesday morning, abducting lecturers and their family members.
