Police Not Aware Of Independence Day Protest In Lagos
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said that the command is not aware of any impending protests on Independence Day.
Odumosu disclosed this to journalists in reaction to a question on some nongovernmental organisations’ intention to hold a demonstration to voice out their aggression against insecurities, police brutality, among other challenges bedeviling the country.
Speaking on Thursday, the police boss said no official letter had been received to notify the command of any protest, adding that it ought to be notified so security could be provided to prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the protest to cause mayhem in the state.
Odumosu said, “Regarding the October 1st protest, we keep on saying that every Nigerian has the right to express his/her feelings but it must be done within the ambits of the law.
“As of today, we have not received any letter from a group that they want to protest.
“I have always advised that those who want to embark on a protest are entitled to security, so we should be able to give them security so that the miscreants will not capitalize on the protest to create mayhem for law-abiding residents.
“They are law abiding in expressing their feelings, they have the constitutional rights to do that but the security agencies should be carried along, so that they will not be a victim of miscreants.
“Our operatives will be out, and where there are infractions to the law during the protest, the law will take its course.”
