By Our Reporter
The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, YOWICAN, Delta State chapter, has berated the state’s Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for not inviting the body to the just concluded Town Hall Meeting held in the state.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Pastor Jeffery Ovo Evwro, he said that it is regrettable that such event was held without extending invitation to the Christian youths in the state.
The Chairman noted that similar platform was provided for Christian youths in Plateau State by the Governor, Simon Bako Lalong, giving the youths the opportunity to express themselves and state the various challenges they are facing in the state.
The Chairman stressed that such was what they expected to happen in the state but to the surprise of the youths, the umbrella body of Christian youths in the state was not invited saying that “Such magnitude of omission has rendered the outcomes of the meeting useless and not youth oriented.”
The statement reads:
“Delta State CAN Youth Chairman bemoans the none invitation of CAN youths executives to the Town Hall Meeting with youths across Delta state held by his Excellency, the governor of Delta state, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.
“The Youth Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Delta state chapter is currently the largest and the most active and organised youth body in Delta state operating in the 25 local government areas of the state. YOWICAN, Delta State has membership of over 700,000 across the state and has helped Christian youths secure jobs, set up businesses and law abiding in the state.
“It is unfortunate and regrettable that the youth wing that possess the basic skills and capacity for addressing youth restiveness and youth basic needs was not invited to a meeting that was supposedly held to address the challenges faced by youths in the state. Such magnitude of omission has rendered the outcomes of the meeting useless and not youth oriented.
“Our counterparts in Plateau State was invited for a similar meeting, where they were given the opportunity to furnish the Plateau State Government with problems/challenges confronting youths in the state as well as proffering lasting solutions to the problems. The situation in Plateau state shows the Governor of the State understands his terrain better and knows what to do in situations like this.”
Evwro said that Okowa has been a friend of Christian youths but has not made any encounter with YOWICAN in recent times. “The last time he had good relationship with CHRISTIAN YOUTHS, YOWICAN, Delta State, was when he was a serving Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, where his impact was felt by CHRISTIAN YOUTHS, YOWICAN, across Delta state but that noble relationship is fast dwindling.”
The body called on Delta state government to put measures in place for a fresh meeting with youths from all shades of opinion in the state if its intentions for the youths are genuine.
