Man, 42, Remanded Over Fraudulent Collection Of 20 Bags Of Rice

A 42-year-old man, Chinedu Iroegbu has been remanded in Correctional Centre by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraudulent collection of 20 bags of rice.

The accused person was said to have committed the offense on January 2, 2020 at Oniyanrin Road, Oke-Ogbo in Ile-Ife.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the accused person committed the offence by fraudulently collecting 20 bags of rice, valued at N346,000 from one Adejumo Adebiyi, with the pretence to pay back in two weeks’ time but failed to do so.

The prosecutor added that the accused person fraudulently converted the 20 bags of rice that belonged to Adebiyi to his own.

The offences according to the Prosecutor contravene Sections 421 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of fraud and collection preferred against him.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Alfred Omotayo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal term, saying that he would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.

The Magistrate, Mrs Habibat Basiru, in her ruling, refused to grant the accused person bail, but ordered for his remand in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ile-Ife.

The case was adjourned till February 27, 2020 for ruling on bail.
