Condemnation has trailed the attack on the Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola when he was addressing #EndSARS protesters in Osogbo on Saturday.
Governor Oyetola, alongside his deputy, Benedict Alabi, who met with the protesters at Olaiya junction, Osogbo, the state capital, to address them came under heavy attacks, as hoodlums freely used different dangerous weapons.
Many vehicles in the convoy of the governor and his deputy were seriously damaged, while some residents got injured in the ensuing melee.
The Coalition of Civil Society groups in the state condemned in strong term the attack on the Governor Oyetola and other Government officials.
According to a statement issued by Waheed Lawal, Chairman of Osun Civil Societies Coalition, the reprehensible attack was orchestrated by some armed hoodlums who had infiltrated the EndSARS protesters.
“We dissociate ourselves from the attack, and anybody that participated in it.
“We call on the security agencies to investigate the circumstances that led to the attack and the earlier assaults on the EndSARS protesters today and that of Thursday by armed thugs,” the group said.
Bishop Seun Adeoye of Sufficient Grace and Truth Ministry, Okinni, Osun State also described the attack on the Governror as condemnable.
The Bishop who said those who attacked the Governror were not EndSARS Protesters but hoodlums said the perpetrators should be arrested and made to face the music.
“This is condemnable!
It is cruel and barbaric for anyone to have attacked and planned to kill Osun Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola in the name of protest.
“Those who did this were not #EndSARS protesters. They were definitely hoodlums who hijacked the protest. Those involved in this should be apprehended immediately and be made to face the music.
Below was the governor’s vehicle. Can you see the axe? This is sad.”He said on his Facebook page
The Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Honourable Timothy Owoeye while reacting said he was disturbed by the sad incident.
He said: “I am disturbed by the sad news coming out of Osogbo where the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola was attacked during a solidarity with #EndSARS protesters.
“While it is okay and constitutional backed to protest, it must be in a peaceful manner as being done across the country. I had my fair share of the #EndSARS protest in Abuja today, though peaceful. I am glad and grateful to God that the Governor is perfectly fine.
In the same vein, a public analyst, Barr. Tola Adediwura, whose office is located very close to the scene, totally condemned the act of violence against the governor and his deputy, describing it as arson.
He said the perpetrators and their sponsors are not being fair to the governor in anyway, and failed to reciprocate his good gesture of humility and sensitivity.
Adediwura therefore advised the governor to quickly instruct law enforcement agencies to commence investigation into the matter immediately and get the perpetrators and their sponsors arrested and equally prosecute them.
“It is obvious that this attack on the governor and his entourage is politically motivated and indeed a bad omen for our emerging democracy”, he said.
