Security: YPF Commends Southwest Governors For Operation Amotekun
A sociopolitical group, Yoruba Progressive Forum also known as Egbe Omo Yoruba Atata has commended all the southwest Governors for coming up with ideas of Western Nigeria Security Network popularly called “Operation Amotekun”.
The forum in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Abdulateef Olalekan and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday described the statement credited to some northern youths as inciting, adding that such comment could cause unnecessary tension in the country.
Recall that Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), had in a statement signed by its National President, Alhaji Isah Abubakar, berated the southwest Governors over the establishment of Operation Amotakun describing it as a threat to federating units saddle with the responsibility of safeguarding the citizenry.
YPF however, urged the southwest Governors to extend such spirit of oneness and togetherness to other areas so as to take the south western zone to the greater heights .
The forum said it’s time for the Yorubas to come together and work in unison regardless of religious and political affiliations saying by so doing, the southwest region would develop at no distant time.
According to the forum, Operation Amotekun was a community policing response to the security challenges in the South-West and a complementary effort and confidence-boosting strategy to secure the territory.
“Now that the South West Governors have jettisoned their political differences and come together with one voice to find lasting solution to the menace of insecurity in the zone, we are urging the federating unt to control domestic security.
The launching of Operation Amotekun by South West is commendable, particularly with the pervasive ethnic coloration of the Nigeria Armed Forces.
“This initiative would definitely curb the high rate of kidnapping and ritual killings in the zone.
Yoruba Progressive Forum however, warned politicians against politicising the operations of the security body, saying doing so would defeat the purpose for the establishment of the security outfit .
“We are pleased with the news of the launching of the security operation today. The Operation which was launched with 120 red coloured Amotekun Hilux vehicles will tackle kidnapping and other criminal activities in the Southwest region.
“The joint operation of trained vigilant groups, Agebekoya and the OPC under Amotekun, will complement the existing security measures already put in place by the federal government.
“We charge the security outfit to work hand- in -hand with the already existing security agencies to bring sanity to our environment and stamp out criminals, who were bent on frustrating the development of the South West region”.
