Update: How Armed Robbery Gangs Killed One, Injured Two In Ondo

A six-man armed gang on Tuesday afternoon attacked the Iju-Itagbolu community, Akure North local government area of Ondo state branch of Wema Bank, killing one person.

It was gathered that the robbery lasted for about 38 minutes on Tuesday’s afternoon when the robbers stormed the town which is a boarder town into Ekiti State.

According to eyewitnesses, the robbers numbering about six who arrived in a Sienna Space Bus attacked the commercial bank (Wema Bank) in the town, and carted away an undisclose amount of money.

The robbers were said to had moved about three “Ghana Must Go” bags which were filled with cash out of the bank.

A female private security guard working at the bank was killed by the robbers upon arrival into the bank’s premises, while two others whose identities are yet to be ascertained were seriously injured and said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The robbers were said to have blew open the bank security door with dynamite after shooting sporadically in different directions to scared residents away.

One police van was demobilized with bullets as well as houses opposite the banks where the robbers suspected that police officers attached to the bank ran into were also riddled with bullets.

After the operation, the robbers left the two cars hijacked from the bank premises few kilometers from the bank on the road, following reported chase from men of the Nigeria Army and the police.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, Femi Joseph assured that the perpetrators would soon be arrested.

Joseph said, “Yes I can confirm the attack on the bank this afternoon and unfortunately one staff of the bank was killed and two others sustained injuries.

“Our men arrived at the scene immediately they got the distress call and there was a gun duel between the robbers and officers.

“I advise members of the public to go about their normal activities and our men are on their trail. Very soon, they will be arrested for prosecution.”
