Osun: NESREA To Mark World Environmental Day Monday
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) in Osun will join their counterparts in other parts of the Country to mark this year World Environment Day, with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”
The event which is slated for Monday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 6, has Drainage Cleanup at Isale-Aro, Novelty March between the Environment family team and the State Exco/Legislature Team at the Osogbo Stadium, WED awareness Rally,Tree Planting and Lectures at the De-distinguished Multipurpose Hall, Aje Int’l Market, Osogbo-Iwo road Osogbo, Osun State, as activities lined up to mark the celebration.
According to a statement by the NESREA Osun State Coordinator, Mr Maike Muhammad, on behalf of the NESREA Stakeholders Committee for the annual event, the essence of this year’s celebration is to urge governments, industries, communities, and individuals to come together to explore sustainable alternatives to the use of single use plastics.
He added that the awareness will urgently reduce the production and excessive practice of single-use plastic that pollute our oceans, damaging marine life thereby threatening human health.
‘’NESREA has responsibility for the protection and development of the environment, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development of Nigeria’s natural resources in general and environmental technology including coordination, and liaison with, relevant stakeholders within and outside Nigeria on matters of enforcement of environmental standards, regulations, rules, laws, policies and guidelines.
‘’The NESREA Act empowers the Agency to be responsible for enforcing all environmental laws, guidelines, policies, standards and regulations in Nigeria, as well as enforcing compliance with provisions of international agreements, protocols, conventions and treaties on the environment to which Nigeria is a signatory’’, he said.
The expected Speaker are Prof Joshua Ojo, OAU. Ile-Ife Speaking on the theme: Beat Plastic Pollution, Mr Oloyede Adelani, The lead consultant, Environmental Manager Consultant Ltd, Ibadan speaking on on Environmental Governance & Best Practices and Mrs Folasade Omole who would be speaking on Taming the Monster of plastic pollution: The EPR Model
