Aregbesola: Weakness in Nigerian Education System Causes of Social Vices
Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has identified the weakness in the nation’s education system as the basis for the rot and negative vices in the society.
He called for a renewed commitment to make Nigeria’s educational system function and relevant in a way that Nigerians will begin to put the country first and give back to the society.
The Osun governor stated this on Tuesday while speaking as a special host at a Policy Formulation Meeting On Admission Into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
Speaking further at the programme held at the Bola Babalakin auditorium, Gbongan, Aregbesola stated that the present administration in the state values basic educattion because it is the pathway to building a decent society.
Aregbesola explained that the education system inherited in the state is not such that can make members of the society productive and have the spirit of giving back to the society, hence the overhaul which his government carried out in the sector.
“In Osun, we believe that the only meaningful success a government can achieve is in setting things right in the education sector, and that is why we have invested so much in state’s education.
“The challenge of our society as a nation is rooted in the weakness of our education system, our education system needs more attention for it begin to produce individuals who will have the love of the country at heart.
“I am happy that most of you here are in my age bracket, the kind of education our own generation received is the type that trained us to be conscious of our environment and give back to the people in form of services.
“It is a pity that this is no more there, our education system needs to be such that will develop identical positive thinkers, our education system needs to be able to produce men and women who will have empathy for the people around.
“We need to have a renewed commitment to make education relevant, attractive and all encompassing such that it will train the individual to want to render back to the society.
“Education is highly fundamental to the development of a people, an educated child is trouble for the family and the society at large, that is why our government in Osun is leaving no stone unturned to give the best public education to our people.”
Present at the policy formulation meeting were Nigeria’s Minister for Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka, Ghana’s Minister for Education, Commissioner’s of education from all 36 states and Abuja as well as Vice Chancellors from all states of Nigeria.
