ASUSS Calls For Implementation Of Secondary Education Commission Act

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS has called on the Federal government to as a matter of urgency commence the implementation of the Secondary Education Commission Act 1999.

ASUSS described the establishment of the Secondary Education Commission as provided in the Act as a fundamental measure to address some of the issues in the management of secondary Education.

This position is contained in a communique at the end of its National Central Working Committee *NCWC* meeting in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

Similarly, the Union called for adherence with the presidential directive of 2014 on the implementation of the Act.

According to the document signed by ASUSS National President, Comrade Sam Omaji and the national Secretary, Comrade Hanney Adebiyi , the Union also throws it’s weight behind the Bill on the elongation of service years for teachers in secondary schools.

ASUSS reasons that the same argument of competence, capacity and expertise that influence the seventy years retirement age for University dons also apply to the situation in the secondary school manpower.

*The Academic Staff Union of Secondary schools also called on the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN to halt the ongoing illegal deductions of secondary schools teachers salary.*

The Union of secondary schools teachers charged the TRCN to remain neutral and be fair to all unions in the discharge of its duties and stop being evassive to its leadership.

Earlier in the leadership of ASUSS across the federation had payed a courtesy call on the Ekiti State Governor, Doctor Kayode Fayemi where it charged the Governor to act by his recent comment on the thirty thousand minimum wage when the implementation eventually commences.

quoted the governor as once saying that thirty thousand naira minimum wage was not an impossibility.

The ASUSS National President stated that harmonious relationship between Labour and Government was fundamental to any socio economic development, while appealing to government not allow basic industrial issues degenerate to crisis.

Responding, Governor Kayode Fayemi expressed assurance of cordial relationship with labour in the state.

Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor explained that as a democrat and product of rule of law, his government was committed to respecting and protecting people’s rights to associate and belong to a Union of their choices, a development which informed his cordial relationship with ASUSS during his first tenure.

Doctor Fayemi said though there were obvious challenges, government would not resulted to excuses in failing in its responsibilities to workers and the people at large.
