Protest Against Irresponsible Govt, CAN President Orders Christians
By Jide Afolabi
The National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Revd. Dr. Supo Ayokunle has directed all Churches in the country to engage in prayer and protest against killings in Nigeria.
The President gave the directive at the ongoing 105th Annual Convention of the Nigerian Baptist Convention holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
He said, “last night, 20 people were killed in Benue State including 2 Catholic priests, this is apart from the killings in Nasarawa state where over 10 people were also killed”.
“An eye witness who came to the convention ground from Nasarawa state said 8 Baptist churches were burnt and several people were displaced from their houses” he said.
The CAN President expressed ‘worry’ over the continued killings and wonder why it is not even covered by the media as if it is a ‘conspiracy’.
He however said that he is not anti government but cannot sit by and watch as the killings continues.
“I am not anti-government but I want a responsible government”. He called for prayers for God to intervene in Nigeria’s situation.
The CAN helmsman directed all Churches in the country to engage in peaceful protest with placards around their churches on Sunday, May 29, 2018. He said the placards should carry inscriptions like “stop the killings in Nigeria”, “Government should act now”, “Stop church destructions” etc.
