How Abacha Dealt With Me For Criticising Him -Ogiyan Of Ejigbo
….Says Immunity For The Executives Root Of Corruption
Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode Oyesosin, on Tuesday said former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, sent his men after him for saying words he considered harsh against his government.
Speaking yesterday during the public lecture organised as part of activities for 2018 Press Week celebrations of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Osun state council, the monarch said he was a guest of the union, when he made some utterance considered harsh against the Head of State.
Oba Oyesosin said he told newsmen during the event that Abacha was talking about peace, but was not looking for peace.
“The following morning, “I received ‘guests’ from Abuja. They told me I spoke against Abacha. It became a big problem for me. When they would not allow me rest, I called one of my sons, who is a journalist to help me out.
“The man I called told me to address newsmen again and claim my initial statement was editorialized. I did that and it was then that I was left off the hook.
“I was given admission to study Mass Comm. I thank God I did not take up the offer. I would have been killed, if I had toed that line because I don’t like double speak,” the monarch said.
The royal father urged newsmen to rise against the immunity being enjoyed by the executive arm of government, stressing that as long as immunity against prosecution for governors and president is retained in the constitution, corruption will remain in Nigeria’s public life.
“I urge you newsmen to do more in exposing the danger immunity against prosecution poses to good governance in the country. If that aspect is removed, you will see what will happen”, the monarch concluded.
In his paper titled ‘Youth Unemployment As Correlates of Insecurity in Nigeria’, the chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, Hon Temitope Olatoye Sugar, urged youths in the country to be more active on the political scene.
Represented by the Dr Tunde Amusat, Olatoye said youths should stop agonising, urging them to start organising themselves and participate more in political process.
