Olowu Charges Nigerians On Promotion Of African Cultural Values

A front line traditional ruler in Osun State, the Olowu of Kuta Kingdom, Oba Hammed Adekunle Oyelude (Tegbosun III) has charged Nigerians to show commitment on the promotion of African Cultural Values wherever they find themselves in the world.

Oba Oyelude gave the charge while addressing the representatives of the Institute of African Cultural Studies led by Dr. Felix Omidire of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, when they paid a courtesy visit to his palace.

The nonarch expressed his displeasure at the rate with which african cultural values, especially nigeria’s have been eroded and displaced by european value system; a situation he finds worrisome and dangerous to the preservation of our heritage.

According to him, the brazen disregard to Cultural Boundary which could be regarded as an affront on African Value system calls for urgent national attention.

He urged historians, archaeologists, creative writers and researchers to seize the initiative and see this as a clarion call as there must be extensive collaboration among all stakeholders for Nigerians and Africans to achieve the much desired preservation of their cultural heritage and values.

As one of the traditional rulers in Nigeria, he stated the roles they play as true custodians of customs, cultural heritage and traditions therefore, make it imperative that there is need for the royal class to form a formidable and united front to stem this ugly tide as cultural heritage and tradition is what their various thrones represents.

Lastly, kabiesi was of the opinion of a need to come up with a template and a course of action to educate the present generation on the appreciation of our heritage before it is completely lost.

He said this we can set out to achieve by bringing back history into our curriculum.

He further stressed the importance of history in any society saying “no society can appreciate the present and prepare for the future without understanding its past and where they’re coming from”

In his remark, the Director of Institute of African Cultural Studies, Dr. Felix Omidire acknowledged the knowledge depth of the Monarch which he found profound and rare.

He made a commitment that his institute is willing to partner Kuta Kingdom in achieving the desires of the royal father and that it will be demonstrated at the forthcoming annual Owu Alugba festival as the institute will be actively involved in the planning and hosting of the event.

He further restated the commitment of his institute by saying they are open to collaboration with any institution or society on the noble cause of preserving and promoting Africa’s culture, values and heritage.
