Akere Commends Buhari Over June 12 Recognition
A Governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC ) in Osun State, Hon. Sunday Akere has described the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria as a move to correct the ills bedeviling the country for more than 25 years now.
A statement signed by the governorship aspirant commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the courage he took to honour the memory of the popular mandate given to Chief MKO Abiola by Nigerians in what is described till date as the fairest, freest and most transparent presidential election ever held in the country.
It added that the aspirations of the electorates who gave the politician their mandate and stood firmly by it, as well as that of few political elites and human right movements that fought doggedly to ensure that the memory of the election was never swept into the dustbin of history have been realised with the pronouncements of the President.
The statement disclosed that the decision to honour the memory of the late MKO is not just for the politician alone, but for the memory of all the souls that were consumed during the struggle for the actualization of the popular mandate.
“I commend the courage of the President to have declared June 12 as the authentic Democracy Day especially when some forces did not want the mandate to be recognised for God knows reasons”.
“I have also subscribed to the morality, not the legality, of the decision as a Nigerian and a democrat. To this end, I call on Nigerians to support Mr. President considering that we have been clamouring for recognition of June 12 as a public holiday.
“The President did not just declare it as a public holiday, but also declared it as Democracy Day, and as well proscribed May 29 that was recognised by the previous administrations.
“It is a good decision by the President and one worth supporting by every democrat in the country and all over the world”
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for this heroic move, Oluomo Akere implored all to applaud the brave move and decision taken by the President rather than reading political meaning to the move.
In conclusion, Oluomo Akere prayed for God’s guidance and wisdom for the President to sort out the problems pervading the political terrains of the nation as we prepare for the elections ahead of us.
