Court Remands Police Officer Who Aided Escape Of Two Suspects From Custody In Osun

A Chief Magistrate court in Osogbo, Osun State has ordered a police officer, Sergeant Ajayi Sunday who allegedly aided the escape of two accused persons standing trial in a case of assault to wit occassioning harm, malicious damage and stealing in prison custody.

The 38-year-old police officer was docked before Magistrate A. O Ajanaku on a two count charge of aiding and abetting the will of justice by negligently permitting the two accused persons to escape from lawful custody.

He pleaded not guilty to the allegations slammed against him but was remanded in custody at Ilesa prison when he could not perfect the bail conditions granted to him.

The prosecutor, Inspector Elisha Olusegun had earlier told the court that the defendant and others at large conspired to commit an offence to wit negligently permitting escape on November 1, 2017 at about 5pm at Osogbo.

He, explained that Sunday assist the two accused persons standing trial on a case of Assault to wit occassioning harm, malicious damage and stealing escaped from lawful custody.

According to prosecutor, the two accused person that escaped from custody are Kaseem Oladehinde and Idowu Hazzan Adedapo.

Inspector Olusegun submitted that the alleged offence was contrary to Section 517, 137 and punishable under Section 138 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Volume 11.Laws of Osun State 2003.

The defense counsel, Mr Taiwo Awokunle urged the court to grant his client bail saying the charge substituted remains allegations on paper and that the defendant was still presumed innocent until the contrary is proved

The magistrate Mrs A. O Ajanaku while ruling granted the defendant bail of 500,000 with two sureties.

She said one of the surety must be a civil servant of level 14 from federal Civil service and the second must be an owner of the landed property with the provision of Certificate of Occupancy

She added that the sureties must sworn to affidavit of means and provide evidence of tax clearance with three passports photography.

Ajanaku ordered that the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the police in charge of the case.

The case was later adjourned till May 23, 2018 for hearing.
