Osun Speaker Warns Councillors Against Misuse Of Legislative Power At The Grassroots

Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Honorable Najeem Salaam, has warned the newly elected councillors in the state against misuse of legislative power in their respective local councils and area offices.

Addressing the councillors at a workshop organised by the state House of Assembly for the newly elected councillors, Salaam said that although the constitution bestowed enormous power on the legislature at all levels, but they should guide against misuse of such power at the local level.

Salaam who said that Osun State was the first state to operate a parliamentary system at the local government level stated that the system was adopted to fast track development at the grassroots

According to the speaker, the legislature must know the limit of its power so we should not misuse the power.

He appealed to the councilors to be contented with whatever remuneration they would be paid, warning them against mismanaging the council fund.

In his speech , the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress in the state, Prince Gboyega Famodun, told the councillors to see their election at the grassroots as a way of training them for future politics

Famodun warned them not to regards local government as an avenue for making money but as an opportunity to learn and build their carriers.

He urged them to cooperate irrespective of their political linage to succeed at the local level.

He told them that the party on which they were elected was supreme and they should follow the party structure they met on ground .

The APC Chairman warned them against fighting over money in the council, warning that the APC would not exist to sanction them if they bring any reports to the council against them.

He said “if we give you instructions you have to follow it, if you have a problem come and brief us at the party secretariat or you go to the house of assembly to solve it. But if you disobey the party instructions we have two faces dove and lion we will deal with you”

Famodun urged them to utilize the position they occupy as councillors to woo the electorate to the party so that they would vote in favour of the party in the forthcoming elections
