A Professor of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Lanre Adewale has attributed the nagging problems confronting Nigeria presently to breakdown of moral values in the families.
The varsity teacher made the assertion at the End of the Year Event and Valedictory Service of the Wings Schools, Iwo, Osun State .
According to him, “no society can progress or attain developments once the family which is the foundation suffers from lack of moral values”.
Professor Adewale insisted that the fundamental problems in Nigeria is currently predicated on erosion of moral values in the families, as the smallest social units.
“We need to go back to the family because no matter how beautiful a house is, without solid foundation, that structure can not stand a test of time.
“Once the family gets it right, the immediate neighborhood gets it right, local government, state government and the entire country would get it right. Once we get it wrong from the family, society would get it wrong as well.
“Speaking on the adverse effects of Social media, Professor Adewale decried the way most students place priority on its usage at the expense of their education.
“We can put technology to the best use if we act on its positive aspect particularly beyond that, technology will not deploy itself people deploy technology and it goes back to the society once we place priority on its negative values”, he said.
He bemoaned a situation where students would prefer to exploit every means to attain excellence without hard work.
In the sane vein, the guest lecturer, Mrs Ganiyat Olurode said family has a prominent role to play in the growth and development of the society.
Mrs Olurode who described family as a subset of the society said there was need for the parents to discharge their parental responsibilities on their children because as exemplary figures.
She charged the students on the need to imbibe the spirit of moral values, describing them as the agent of positive change in the society.
She said “I want to advise you to always be a good child. Be obedient, respectful, truthful, tolerant and cooperative, be well dressed and eschew any form of social vices as being proclaimed in holy Qur’an and Hadith.
The founder of the Wings Schools, Professor Lai Olurode, however reiterated the commitment of the school management to to breeding future leaders.
