Parliamentary Democracy Good, Less Intensive for Nigeria – Aregbesola
By Olabode Abolaji
Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has advocated a structured parliamentary democracy for the country.
According to the governor, the present presidential system is full of ills that exceed its benefits.
Aregbesola stated that the current practice is of waste to the economy which will be corrected with the setup of a responsive and all-encompassing Parliament.
The Governor advocated this while being honoured with a life membership award of the Osun State house of assembly as part of activities marking his 60th Birthday.
“Nothing can be more incongruous than operating a total presidential system of government in a multi ethnic nation like Nigeria, it is out of it.”
“The presidential system often leads to anarchy as too much power is vested in the executive, but with parliamentary democracy, we are spending less and getting more.”
“It also allows for stronger debates to ensure transparency and harmonize in governance”, Aregbesola stressed.
He noted with passion that the delineation of constituencies should be changed from geographical locations to population and harmonization of various social and interest associations in the society.
The Osun Governor appreciated the state parliamentarians and the labour unions for their understanding as they have collected half salaries since July 2015.
Ogbeni Aregbesola condemned the mindless terrorist act in Manchester, England on Monday night with a call on All APC controlled Houses of Assembly to commend the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai and order a probe into the alleged plans by some politicians to truncate the present Democratic dispensation.
He also called for a national rally to protest the development on Monday next week.
