Presidential Committees Hails UN Deputy For Visible Response to Humanitarian Issues

The Presidential Committee on the North-East Initiative (PCNI) has commended Ms Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary- General, for her commitment to tackling humanitarian issues in the country.

Alhaji Tijjani Tumsah, the Vice Chairman of the committee, gave the commendation during a meeting with Ms Mohammed, according to a statement.

Mr Alkasim Abdulkadir, Head of Media and Communications of the committee, issued the statement on Friday in Abuja.

Tumsah said that the visibility she brings to humanitarian and development issues in the North-East is an added advantage in providing durable solutions to the challenges in the country.

He noted that the substantial progress recorded in the humanitarian response scale up by UN agencies.

This, he said, was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s North-East Recovery Plan.

Mohammed also commended the committee for its interventions in the North-East, particularly in assisting displaced persons as well as its durable solution plans as contained in the Buhari Recovery Plan.

Mohammed said she was on a “high-level mission’’ to Nigeria to bring to light the issues that affect women and how they could be tackled.

“The purpose of the high-level mission is to highlight the importance of women participation and leadership in peace, security and development initiatives and to foster stronger women mobilization.

“The mission also aims at bringing to light the consequences of conflict-related sexual violence on women and girls and to advocate for the inclusion of livelihood support in policy and pragmatic response.

“We would also bring visibility to the roles women play in advancing the realisation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deputy UN secretary-general met with women leaders and conflict-affected women and girls at the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja, on Thursday

Mohammed is accompanied on the mission by Ms Pramila Patten, Special Representative to the Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict and Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director. (NAN)
