Osun Monarch, Olowu Of Kuta Urges Prompt Tax Payment Culture

A frontline Traditional Ruler in Osun state, Olowu of Kuta, Oba Hammed Adekunle Oyelude Tegbosun III, has urged Nigerians and the people of the state in particular to imbibe the culture of paying their taxes promptly.

Oba Oyelude noted that for a developing country as Nigeria to meet up with global requirements and cope with the trend of world socioeconomic and political challenges, taxation must be taken seriously.

The revered monarch who was one of the members of the panel at the 1st Eburu Annual Symposium on innovation in City Governance and Monarchy: “Kings and Ruling in the 21st Century knowledge Era” made the appeal.

He said the responsible, civilised and advanced countries remained thriving and successful because they generate their resources from taxes.

The Monarch said under-developed and developing countries remained poor and backward because of their poor taxation culture.

According to Oba Oyelude, Taxation has now remained only source of survival to governments at all levels and principle of cash flow in meeting both its capital and recurrent expenditures most importantly, in boosting Internally Generated Revenues, IGR.

This according to the monarch was as a result of the Mono -economic direction and practice Nigeria has indulged herself in since discovery of oil which had eventually failed consequently upon sharp drop of oil value at the International Market,

He stressed  the need for all Nigerians especially people of  Osun to come to a full realization of the ugly fact by acting well their part through payment of Taxes and other levies so as for Government to fulfill its own side of Obligations.

He added that the emerging economic realities remain the signal to the fact that no nation can survive without huge revenue from taxation.

There is no gainsaying that, Nigeria is ridding on bumpy road at a moment the people of the country were highly expecting dividends of Government but I do believe this hard time is just for a while, normalcy will return to economic sector of Nigeria where we all back to the booming era, however, it is critical for people Osun to fulfill their area of allegiance to the Governments in order to ensure quick economic recovery.” He noted.

“I want to appeal to the good people of Osun to always make issue of Tax payment a top priority and matter of duty.” He concluded.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Occasion Akinrun of Ikirun His Royal Majesty, Oba Rauf Olayiwola Adedeji described the symposium as a worthwhile and timely saying it came at a trying period when Nigerians were looking for a means of getting dividends of democracy from their Governments through display of good leadership skill be it constituted or monarchial authorities.

“I presume the Convener of this brilliant initiative who happens to be  our kind has thought it wise for that, he deserves a commendation for the value-worth platform which is in order to move Osun and Nigeria forward.”

Speaking on the key roles of traditional rulers in Nigeria, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi explained that, the functions of the Royal fathers are germane in the communities and Nigerian political space ranging from enforcement of love, peace, protection of lives and property as well as custody wing of cultural artifacts.

Oba Olabomi who was one of the members of panel on behalf of other galaxy of Monarchs present at the event lamented level of redundancy and absolute neglect of the system which have turned it into object of ridicule before all and sundry

He, therefore, called for immediate restitution from governments in a bid to restoring the lost glory and keeping the institution alive and functional.

Setting record straight on the motive behind the Platform the Host and Convener, the Eburu of Oba, His Royal Majesty Oba  Prof Adekunle Adeogun-Okunoye said, the Annual Global gathering of Rural Kings was stemmed from passion to serve to humanity

Oba Okunoye further explained that the forum was designed to brainstorm on the issues affecting the rural communities.

“It is imperative that we encourage innovation in our cities through, innovation story, support strategic risk-taking and collaboration of Innovation pure and simple.” He affirmed.
