Rights activists under the aegis of the United Action for Democracy (UAD) have kept their promise to protest today in Lagos against the hardship which the policies of the Muhammadu Buhari administration have inflicted on Nigerians.

“We are fully ready. We are fully mobilised and moving towards Yaba from different directions,” UAD National Convener, Gabriel Ojuma Esq., told News Express on phone minutes ago.

He said that the protesters would take off from the Lagos Headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Yaba, from where they would march through Ikorodu Road down to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, where the anti-fuel price increase rally that shook the then Goodluck Jonathan administration was held this time five years ago.

“At the Gani Park in Ojota, there will be speeches, including by veterans of the struggle. We are going to commemorate the 2011 uprising to the obnoxious fuel price increase of the Jonathan administration. We are also going to pass a strong message to President Buhari that his austerity policy is not acceptable to Nigerians,” Barrister Ojuma said.

He named Comrade Issa Aremu and Barrister Ebun-olu Adegboruwa as some of those expected to address the rally.

As a prelude to the rally, Barrister Ojuma had over the weekend issued a statement reads as follows:

“MASS RALLY!

“Join United Action for Democracy’s MASS RALLY against austerity policies of Buhari’ Government (in commemoration of January 2012 Uprising) in Lagos on 16/01/2017.

“Take Off Point: Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Yaba, in procession to Gani Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos.

“Time: 8am Prompt.

“ENOUGH OF THE MASSIVE HUNGER AND HARDSHIP!”
