Buhari Should Fight Corruption Not Individuals, Cleric Warns
By Ayobami Agboola, Osogbo
A religious leader and Diocesan Bishop of Anglican Diocese, Reverend Isaac Oluyamo has advised President Muhammodu Buhari to face squarely his fight against corruption instead of personality witch-hunt.
The cleric also admonished those at the helms of affairs to always prioritize people’s welfare above personal consideration and interest.
Oluyamo stated this while delivering sermon at a special church programme as part of activities heralding 2017 Press Week of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Chapter.
The clergyman who commended the leadership style of President Buhari especially on his zeal to rid off the nation from all forms of corruption, frowned at what he described as palpable nepotism in the government war against corruption.
Oluyamo accused the president of being selective and biased in his zeal to map out Nigeria from corruption, saying no iota of gain would be recorded in an unjust society.
He expressed confidence in the Buhari anti-corruption crusade just as he implored him to be more committed in his efforts to drive out all forms of corruption in all spheres of the economy.
Oluyamo lamented on what he described as self-servicing war against corruption, stressing that it is high time for governments to fight corruption and other forms of social vices.
The Anglican Diocesan Bishop implored President Buhari on the need to be impartial, fair and just in his high profile anti-corruption crusade.
“As much as I appreciate the anti-corruption drive of this administration, it is also imperative to advise Mr. President not to allow personal interest or nepotism to becloud his sense of justice while fighting corruption.
“We have seen several cases where many were being witch-hunted for no just cause. Some of this exercise could be best described as fight against enemies not really those perpatrated corruption.
“In order to sustain the confidence reposed on Mr President by Nigerians, government must expedite action to correct the anomaly in its moves against corruption”.
Oluyamo who called for active participation in politics, said it is high time for Nigerians irrespective of socio-economic, religious and political differences to come together and move the country forward.
He said Nigeria has gotten to the stage where efforts should be tailored towards improving the nation’s economy and people’s welfare.
The cleric who canvassed for stomach infrastructure called on Nigerian leaders to prioritize people’s welfare to social infrastructure.
According to him, it is high time for government at all levels to do the needful in promoting ideology that would bring drastic difference in the general well-being of the citizenry.
He added, “Our governments should not be found wanting in living up to their responsibilities most importantly the people’s welfare. People’s welfare should be paramount in the hearts of our leaders.
“Government should start coming up with policies and programmes that would not only centre on the welfare of the masses but help in providing basic needs for citizenry.
“Government must see the need in prioritizing stomrch infrastructure rather than social infrastructure”.
“The workers salaries must be prioritise just as people’s welfare should always be given utmost attention.
“Government should rather concentrate more on the welfare of the people instead of construction of Bridge”.
The cleric charged Nigerians on the need to be prayerful and commit their leaders on to the Lord, saying the happenings in Nigeria call for God’s intervention.
Oluyamo said the circumstances in the country had called for collective efforts to rescue the nation, asserting that it is time for all to champion civic responsibilities.
“We must advise our leaders, we must encourage our leaders and we must pray for them at all times”, he added.
Oluyamo who described sins as bane of existence called on the people to refrain from any act capable of turning them against their creator.
