Ex-convict Bags Another Jail Term for Stealing

An Akure Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Oke-EdA, has sentenced a 23-year-old ex-convict, Bidemi Olaleye to one year imprisonment with hard labour over stealing.
Olaleye was said to have committed the offence at Oja-Oba, Adesida Market, Akure on March 11, 2017.
The convict who was brought before magistrate A.M Fadoju, by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp was facing a one count charge of stealing.
According to the charge sheet, Olaleye snatched a bag containing mobile phone valued N5,500, wedding ring valued N20,000 and cash sum of N2,500 all valued N28,000 from one Mrs Olusola.
The offence, according to the NSCDC Prosecutor, Mr. Ebriku David, contravened Sections 390(9), and 390(4) (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1 Laws of the Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
David told the court that the complainant came to their office at Alagbaka, Akure to lodge a complain of bag snatching, by unknown person on the day of the incidence.
He further told the court that in other to bring the perpetrator to book, NSCDC’s Intelligent and Investigation Department set up a machinery surveillance around the place where the incident happened, Oja-Oba, Adesida Market, in other to track down the convict.
The NSCDC prosecutor informed the court that on March 21, 2017, the convict was arrested for another offence of bag snatching and after his arrest, he was brought to NSCDC office where he confessed to have snatched bag from Mrs Precious.
He told the court that the convict snatched the bag and took N2,500, from it and threw the bag into the bush.
The convict who was represented by Barr Olugbenga Adedugbe, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge.
Adedugbe pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy since the convict had admitted to the offence.
Delivering his judgment, the presiding magistrate, Fadoju convicted and sentenced Olaleye to a year imprisonment with hard labour or pay N20,000 fine.
