Adesina, German Scholar to bag FUTA Honorary PhD Award

The President of African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina and a German scholar, Prof. Rainer Horn will receive honorary doctorate degree of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, at the 28th convocation ceremony of the university.

Professor Adebiyi Daramola, the Vice Chancellor of the university said the award was in recognition of the significant role of the duo in the society and their achievement in their various field.

Daramola spoke through the Chairman, 28th Convocation Ceremonials Committee of the university, Prof Olaniyi Okunlola at a press conference to herald the convocation which will hold between 10th and 18th of March at the weekend

A total number of 105 students will bag the university’s PhD degree, 731 will bag Master’s Degree and 40 will bag the Post Graduate Diploma Certificate of the university, according to Daramola.

The VC said 85 of the students made first class, 1044 made second class (upper), 1274 made second class (lower), 453 made third class, while 33 graduated with Pass.

Adequate security has been put in place for the big event in other to have successful convocation ceremony, said the VC.

He disclosed that a student, Master Ali Abdul-Hafeez Semomhe from the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering emerged the overall best student of the university for the 2015/2016 academic session with CGPA of 4.89.

Speaking on the university contribution to educational development, Daramola said that the university has in no small measure have made contributions to the development of the education sector and the nation at large by its supply of critical manpower to several higher institutions.

The VC He also hinted that the university collaborated with the Ministry of

Niger/Delta Affairs for the training ex-militants in the intuition, adding that no fewer than 78 Niger/Delta ex-militants were trained in different disciplines.

Daramola maintained that 50 of the ex-militants who were trained in agriculture have already graduated, while 28 of them are currently undergoing training in welding and fabrication.

He said the ex-militants were trained by the centre for entrepreneurship studies of the university, adding that the training would make them shun militancy and be of good conduct with high level productivity to themselves and the country at large.
