In his commitment to transform the state economically through job provision and wealth creation with agriculture, the Ondo state governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has said that the state under his leadership would soon commence production of rice for both
local and international consumption.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of FADAMA III Additional
Financing project, led by Mr Tayo Adewumi, the National Project
Coordinator, Akeredolu said the rice which would be produced in the
state would cater for many individuals.
The Governor appreciated the initiative of the Federal Government at introducing FADAMA, which he described as a vehicle to provide means of livelihood to the teeming poor and those in the rural areas.
Akeredolu also stressed the importance of tractors for commercial farming, saying that the provision of the tractors and other equipments would aid mechanised farming.
“We pray that FADAMA can assist us with the provision of tractor
equipment centers in each Senatorial District,” the governor stated.
He expressed his concern on the pilot vegetable project,
especially for women empowerment, citing the examples of such schemes as sole means of livelihood in some countries.
He said: “It is less tasking, hence women can easily do this so that we
don’t keep importing vegetables from South Africa.”
Earlier, Mr Tayo Adewumi, National Project Coordinator, FADAMA III
Additional Financing, revealed that a 10 day programme for youths
would soon be organized in the state.
Adewumi also explained that there was a plan for production of
Sunshine rice in Ondo before the end of the year.
“We want to make sure that the rice we are producing, we bring it out
publicly and give it a name and brand. We will work with your
government to make sure we are able to do this,” he said.
