Nigerian U.S Engineer Tests Run Solar Charging Booths in Ileogbo, Osun
An Ileogbo born United State based power plant engineer, Semiu Odeyinka in collaboration with a socio-elites group, Ileogbo Development Forum (IDF), has launched the installation of solar charging booths in Ileogbo, the headquarters of Ayedire Local Government, Osun State.
The installation was a test run of the project in Osun and Nigeria as a whole. The stations were strategically located in four different areas in the town for easy and all inclusive advantage.
According to Engr. Odeyinka, the solar device can power up to 50 phones, 20 Tablets and 5 Laptops. It can also be adapted to power Radio, Fan and TV if needed.
The project is a debut in the whole of Nigeria.
Engineer Odeyinka, who is also the MD/CEO of POWERGIES NIGERIA LTD, a company which specializes in power generation and integrated energy solutions, said his company launched the phone charging booths in Ileogbo as a mark of honour to his home town and a way of giving back to the society that produced him.
Crediting the choice of the locations, the coordinator of IDF, Mr. Alli Yakub, disclosed one charging booth was given to each ward, saying Ileogbo is made of 4 wards.
Engr. Odeyinka hinted technology has grown beyond conventional methods of the past of which Nigeria, her government and citizens must be dynamic in meeting world’s standard. He said electricity is the mitochondria of a nation’s economic development, tasking government to holistically diversify the power generation of the country through the available optional means especially the solar.
He also said government, most especially Ministry of Power reduces bottleneck and long processing time that Foreign Investors experience when securing power plant license and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The bureaucracy, conflicting requirements within government agencies – NERC and NBET and long processing time is very discouraging because no investors will tie down his or her money.
He also said Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) needs to strike the balance when determining the feed-in-tariff for electricity consumers because the current tariff regime is far below project’s or investor’s indicative tariff as no power investor will come to the country when the proposed project is already indicating loss. A kind of tax credit is used in advanced countries like US, Germany and the U.K. to bridge the gap between investor indicative tariff and the price electricity consumers pay.
Odeyinka has pledged to extend the project to some neighboring towns before partnering with state and federal governments. He pointed there have been so much request for the same gadgets shortly after the installation of the pioneer.
In his words “Sun is a free gift from nature. The discovery of solar technology as a means of power generation is a blessing for a nation with virile government to harness. Apart from its accessibility, electricity from solar is also powerful with no barrier of epileptic supply if properly designed by competent professionals.
