Governor Mimiko’s Convoy Attacked in Akure, Vehicles Destroyed

The convoy of Ondo state Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko was attacked at the entrance of Ondo State House of Assembly on Thursday, CityMirrorNews learnt.

According to investigation, Mimiko’s convoy was allegedly attacked by some protesters who wanted to prevent him from presenting the 2017 Fiscal year budget.

It was not clear whether the suspects are member of any political party or sympathetic to any of the factions in the state House of Assembly. But some people accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of responsible for the attack.

CityMirrorNews learnt that the suspects hurled stones on the coaster bus and the ambulance following the KIA vehicle driven by Mimiko himself. The mirrors of the side screens of the two vehicles were destroyed.

However, seven suspects were arrested in connection with the attack. The suspects are: Tunde Alabi (28), Abiola Eniola (27), Yusuf Muhammed (25), Olanrewaju Olomolotan (40), Adeniyi Michael (30), Samson Omodara (20) and Ijalade Oluwaseun(27).

The suspects were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate court on Friday on a four count charges of felony, public disturbance, unlawful assemble and public damage.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Martins Olowofeso told the court that the alleged offence was punishable under section 219 of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Laws of the Ondo State of Nigeria.

Inspector Olowofeso prayed the court to remandthe accused persons at Olokuta prison, saying that there were other suspects at large.

But the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Defence counsel, Mr. Femi Adetoye urged the court to grant bail to the accused persons on the most liberal term, saying that the alleged offences were bail able ones.

Adetoye promised that the suspects would not jump bail and they were ready to provide reliable sureties.

Ruling on the bail application, the presiding magistrate, Mrs Victoria Bob-Manuel ordered the accused persons to be remanded at Olokuta prison custody and adjourned the case till February 22, 2017 for mention.
