ICC Chief Prosecutor Advocates Untainted Justice as Panacea to Global Crises
By Abdulrofiu Agboola, Osogbo.
The Chief Prosecutor and Legal Adviser at the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, has frowned over the proliferation of socio-political injustice that has eaten deep into the fabric of every society in the world.
The veteran Jurist said the societal anomalies had reached the climax, thus calls for swift intervention by every right thinking legal practitioner.
Bensouda, made the assertion at a programme organized to flag off series of activities lined up to mark the 9th Great University of Ife Alumni International Reunion Celebration at the weekend.
Bensouda who doubled as the Gambian Solicitor General and Minister of Justice, said it is high time for global legal reawakening to combat all forms of palpable injustices so as for peace to reign.
The legal Icon who was a recipient of the Alumni award, said the only way to place the world on its fundamental right tracks was for Jurists to consciously rise to the occasion and address injustices in all quarters as part of efforts in banishing inhuman acts in the society.
She argued that, if this is embraced, the rule of law to protect humanity against criminality would be upheld and enshrined.
According to her, “it pains me a lot when I see injustices not being given adequate attention in a court of law.
“One of my commitment in life is to see that justice reigns in every circle just as my priority remained the need to ensure that right of every individual is protected”.
The ICC Prosecutor further remarked that; “there should be international justices all over the countries to address cases like rape, child abuse, sexual harassment, suicide attack, adoption and many others without political interference.
“Criminal interrogation must be justly handled without political interference while cases of molested women, raped girls and many others especially, those inflicted with tortures should be handled without fear of favour by the concerned authorities.
Earlier, the Worldwide President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Mr. Segun Oke, disclosed that, a total sum of N15.5 billion had been set aside by the association to construct a befitting new students’ hostel accommodation that would conveniently accommodate over 8,000 students.
He also hinted that, the Alumni had concluded every necessary plan to continuously contribute its quota towards ensuring better living for all the students in the institution, saying adequate provision of social amenities remained the topmost priority of the Association.
The president however pointed out that, the Association had already concluded plans to facilitate the on-going construction of the Senate building worth N1 billion in the institution to make life more meaningful to both students and the school management.
He added, “apart from these strides, our Association has renovated virtually all the existing male and female hostels on campus while renovations were also carried out at the faculty of agriculture, lecture theatre among others.
“Scholarships were given out to over 1,000 students to encourage them in their academic pursuits while over 2,000 books and intellectual items were donated to Oluwasanmi library in the institution to broaden and enhance students and lecturers assimilation’s capacities.
“We are also working assiduously to provide state-of-the-arts accommodation facilities for students so as to ease the untold hardship in securing accommodation on campus.
He therefore assured the world that the Alumni would not relent in ensuring that the welfare of Obafemi Awolowo University’s students are adequately taken care of, saying “we have constituted a body saddled with the responsibility of ensuring harmony between workers, management, students and members of the university community”.
