Jide Kosoko Opens Up On Living With Diabetes Since 1996
Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, has revealed that he has been living with diabetes since 1996, saying his decades-long experience with the condition has made him more conscious of his health.
The veteran actor disclosed this during an interview on African A-List, uploaded to YouTube on Saturday.
Kosoko said his experience had given him a deeper understanding of managing his health, while clarifying that his remarks should not be interpreted as a claim to know more than medical professionals in every area.
“I became diabetic in 1996; I understand my health better than some doctors do. Do not misquote me. I am not saying I know how to do everything, I just do not want to die,” he said.
The actor also spoke about his personal life, revealing that he had lost three wives, including the mother of his daughter, Bidemi Kosoko, who died during childbirth.
“I lost my wife during childbirth; that’s Bidemi’s mother. I have lost three wives,” he said.
Reflecting on his career, Kosoko recalled that his journey in theatre began when he was a child, describing himself as one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
“I started theatre at age 10, in 1964, and formed my own group in 1972. I can confidently say that I am one of the pioneers of this industry,” he said.
The actor also offered advice to parents, stressing the importance of treating their children fairly and ensuring that none feels less valued than the others.
“Treat your children equally; let them know they’re equal in your mind,” he advised.
On the growing influence of social media, Kosoko said many people were initially apprehensive about the platform but had since learnt to use it to their advantage.
However, he expressed concern about what he considered inappropriate content shared by some users, questioning the need for certain forms of online display.
“When social media was coming, we were afraid. But now we use it to our advantage. Some use it uselessly. Must you shake your bumbum and talk about that jargon?” he asked.
Kosoko’s remarks touched on his long career in entertainment, personal losses, family values and his experience managing diabetes over nearly three decades.
