Kate Henshaw Exposes Dark Side Of Surrogacy
Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has raised alarm over the growing trend of surrogacy in Nigeria, warning that it may be used to exploit financially vulnerable women in the absence of proper legal protections.
Speaking during an interview on News Central, Henshaw stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to enact clear and enforceable legislation to regulate surrogacy arrangements and protect the physical and emotional well-being of surrogate mothers.
“Surrogacy is a means to exploit people who are not financially capable. You just pay them as they have a child for you,” she said. “But what will make you look after them? Are you bound under any law to ensure they’re cared for before and after delivery?”
Henshaw, known for her outspoken advocacy on social issues, noted the complexity of surrogacy and the emotional and physical toll it can have on women.
“There are lots of emotions attached to carrying a child, apart from the changes in the body. There are mental changes. Women… they can die, you know? So it shouldn’t be something to be just thought of lightly.”
Calling on Nigerian lawmakers, she added:
“I hope Nigeria rises to meet this. I hope we have laws that will work and not just be suggestions.”
