60th Anniversary: BHS Old Students Call For Return Of Discipline In Secondary Schools
The alumni of Baptist High School, Iree, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun state, has called for return of discipline to primary and secondary schools in the country.
Speaking at a press conference heralding the 60th anniversary of the association in Osogbo, Osun state capital, the president of the association, Mr Kayode Odebode, noted that indiscipline has contributed to the poor education of students in Nigerian schools today.
He stressed that parents have a lot of roles to play, advising that teachers alone should not be left for the task.
Comparing education in the past with the present, Odebode said, “Education has suffered a lot. That is why government can not do it alone. Parents also has a lot to do. Parents abandoned their roles to teachers now. The parents should not neglect their duties.
He disclosed that the association has sponsored over 15 indigents students on scholarship to the university, with a view to encourage the brilliant students.
Aside that, “some would be given cash award while some will be given scholarship to university this year. The body organising this ceremony is partnering with the government, having realised that we can lend a hand of support to the school and the pupils by creating and adding value.
“The association has refurbished 6 blocks of classrooms, equipped the laboratory, IT facility, a new corpers lodge with modern fittings; face-lift to the school and a new library fully equipped with internet facility.
“The association is responsible for the welfare of the staff and students and several scholarship foundation have been created by members to assist indigent students and motivate the brilliant ones.
On the agitation by some people that government should return schools to the missionary, he said, “I don’t think any average person could afford the school fee in missionary schools today.
“Education should be appropriately priced. What we pay now may not really be appropriate to afford quality education.
