Woman Sets Herself Ablaze Over Divorce
A tragic incident has been reported in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa, where a 40-year-old woman (name withheld) set herself on fire after being divorced by her husband.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
According to the PPRO, the woman, who resided in Garin Mallam village, allegedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze.
“On Thursday, at about 07:40hrs, the command received a heartbreaking and pitiful report from Guri LGA that a woman, aged 40 of Garin Mallam village, poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze, and got burnt beyond recognition on the outskirts of the village,” Shiisu said.
A squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene, verified the incident, and transported the charred remains to the hospital. The body was later handed over to the family for burial.
Shiisu added that preliminary investigations indicated the woman had been struggling with depression for months after her divorce.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi, expressed deep sympathy over the incident and urged people to seek solace in Almighty Allah during difficult times.
“People should always seek advice and counselling from elders on complex issues to avoid such unfortunate incidents,” Abdullahi advised.
