Herb Seller Docked For Allegedly Selling Newborn Baby For N150,000 In Osun
A herb seller, Ganiyat Oladapo, on Monday appeared before an Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Osogbo, for alleged sale of a new born baby for N150,000.
The defendant was said to have procured a pregnant woman, Mariam Oladapo, and took her to Anambra state, were she was to work as street herb seller.
However, when Ganiyat was delivered of a baby, the defendant allegedly sold the newborn for N150, 000.
Arraigned on two counts bordering on child trafficking, conspiracy and illegal procurement, the police prosecutor, Inspector Jacob Akintunde, informed the court that defendant committed the act sometime in June, 2020.
The charges read in part, “Sometime in June 2020 at Osogbo, you conspired and procured one Mariam Oladapo from Osogbo to Anambra State where her child was sold for N150,000, thereby committingan offence punishable under Section 14(2) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, 2003.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to charges against her
The defendant’s counsel, Taiwo Awokule, urged the court to grant his client bail.
The magistrate, Modupe Awodele, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N1m, with two sureties and adjourned the matter till February 9, 2020.
