Deaf And Dumb Man Bags Six Months Imprisonment For Burglary, Stealing

A 22-year-Old deaf and dumb man, Muraina Sodiq, has been convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment at Ile Ife Correctional Centre by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for burglary and stealing.
The convict was said to have committed the offence on March 15, 2020 at Ona Babaona, Oke baale area of Osogbo when he broke into shop of one Rafiu Haruna with intent to commit felony therein.
According to the charge sheet, the convict stole one welding Engine valued at N45,000 and one motor battery valued at N18,000 which total valued at N63,000.
The convict who the charge sheet was interpreted to him by the IPO in sign language and also with the help of his father admitted guilty to the two counts charges of house breaking and stealing levelled against him by the police
The offence committed was contrary to and punishable under Sections 413 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State Nigeria 2002.
The defence Counsel, Okobe Nagite, while giving his allocutus prayed the court to be lenient in his judgement.
He said considering the fact that the accused person is deaf and dumb, he was beaten to stupor when he was caught at the scene of the crime before they realised he was deaf and dumb.
While presenting the fact of the matter, Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olayiwola Razaq said that the convict is an ex-convict at Magistrate court ll Osogbo
He added that his father can also testify to it.
Handling down his judgement, Magistrate Olugbenga Oladoke convinced Sodiq on self admittance and sentenced him to
six months imprisonment at Ile Ife Correctional Centre.
