Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has disclosed that the the sum of N76bn is required to fix public schools in the state and bring the education sector to desired standard

Governor Makinde who made this known while inaugurating the Board of Trustees of Government College, Ibadan, GCI at the executive chamber, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on Wednesday admitted that government alone can not fund education

He called for more support from voluntary individual or group that are ready to give back to the society through collaboration with the government in order to ensure quality standard of Education in the state.

The governor assured that his administration will continue to ensure that things get better adding that the collaboration will create the path to regaining the pace- setter status in the educational system and advance education in the country

While describing the development as innovative , he said his decision to hand over the school to its Old Boys Association was reached after perusing the proposal brought by the association and subsequent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU)

The governor who echoed that the activities of GCI remains subject to regulation by the state government, divulged that the board activities would be reviewed in 2024.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Abdurahman Abdulraheem, described it as another landmark achievement of the state government, adding that the template would help to solve major challenges in the sector, as well as inspired critical stakeholders including old students associations of various schools to be actively involved in the management and funding of education in the state.

While applauding Governor Makinde, the President, Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, Dr. Wálé Babalakin, assured him that the gesture will be a beginning of great things in the state, assuring that the school, will witness a remarkable difference within a year of taking over.

The board of trustees of Government College, Ibadan GCI inaugurated comprises seven representative of GCI, two from the state government and two others from parents-teacher association,( PTA) while the rest from the old Students.
