UNIOSUN Workers Suspend Strike As Osun Assembly Intervenes
….set To Revisit Allegations Of Fraud Against VC
The striking workers of Osun State University has suspended their three week old industrial action.
The workers under the Joint Action Committee suspended their strike on Monday after meeting with the State House of Assembly, Osun Head of Service and the State Commissioner of Police.
The workers who are members of Non-Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) had demanded for the payment of their earned allowances among other entitlements.
Confirming the suspension of the strike on Tuesday, NASU Chairman of UNIOSUN Branch, Comrade Isaiah Fayemi said the unions decided to suspend the strike for two weeks after the interventions of the State Assembly, Head of Service and the Commissioner of Police in the state.
Fayemi disclosed that the lawmakers promised to revisit the allegations of fraud leveled against the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Labo Popoola of which the Governing Council had exonerated him of.
The lawmakers were also said to ensure that the earned allowances and other entitlements of the workers were acceded to in other to restore sanity to the campuses.
The unions however rejected the offer made by the Governing Council of UNIOSUN to pay them their earned allowances totaled N300million within the next thirty months.
He said, “we decided to suspend this strike for two weeks after the State House of Assembly intervened. The Head of Service and CP also intervened. They promised to look into our grouses.
” We also requested that the lawmakers revisit the allegations of fraud we made against the VC. We are not resuming because of their decision to pay our earned allowances on instalments neither do we feel threatened by the management’s ‘no work, no pay’ threat,” Fayemi added.
Meanwhile, the workers have resumed work following directives by e leadership of the unions.
