Lack Of Continuity Is Problem With Nigeria – Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has identified lack on continuity in policy and project as the major problem in Nigeria
Obasanjo stated this on Wednesday at a book launch he co-authored titled; “Making Africa Work’.
The former president while reacting to question on why implementation of ideas has been a major problem in Nigeria said the answer is lack of continuity.
According to him,“The problem with governments is that they don’t want to engage in continuity.
“A government will be sworn in and the next thing you hear is ‘we are the first to, we will be the first to’ do this and that.
“So I do ask myself, what do these ones want to do that hasn’t been done.
Obasanjo who recalled while in power, how he formed a team and sent them to different parts of the world to understudy development of countries doing well, reminded that it was based on teams report that National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) was formed.
He said, “Before I left government, I formed a team and sent them to different parts of the world to understudy development of countries doing well.
“They came back, gave their report and we formed National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS). We also had States and Local chapters.
Obasanjo said Jonathan came in and abandoned the programme. I was looking.
He therefore informed that he then sent someone, whose name he said he won’t disclose to Jonathan to go and lecture this man (Jonathan). Let him know what is possible and what is not, so they don’t keep deceiving him.
Obasanjo who claimed to have left office at electricity generating capacity 4,000mw said he laid out plan to increase it to 10,000mw in subsequent years.
Again, before I left, we were able to generate 4,000MW of electricity. We had laid out a plan to increase to 10,000MW in subsequent years.
