Ogunkanmi Urges FG to Turn Nigeria’s Independence into Better Living Conditions
By Our Reporter
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Ayedire, Iwo and Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency, Hon. Abidemi Gbenga Ogunkanmi, has urged the Federal Government to translate the gains of nationhood into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
Ogunkanmi made the call in a message to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday.
He said Nigerians deserved good governance, economic stability and policies capable of easing the burden of rising living costs on families across the country.
According to him, the occasion should go beyond speeches and ceremonies and serve as an opportunity for political leaders to confront the economic difficulties facing citizens and take concrete steps to restore confidence in the country’s future.
Ogunkanmi questioned the meaning of freedom for citizens who struggle to afford basic necessities, secure decent jobs or access quality healthcare and education.
He said: “The anniversary should not be limited to ceremonial celebrations and political speeches but should provide an opportunity for leaders to answer critical questions about the country’s direction.
“What does independence mean to a Nigerian who cannot comfortably feed his family? What does freedom mean to a young graduate without employment opportunities? And what future awaits the next generation if economic hardship continues to deepen?”
The former Deputy Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly during the 7th Assembly called on the Federal Government to prioritise policies that would strengthen the economy, support local businesses, create jobs and reduce financial pressure on households.
He also urged increased investment in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and youth empowerment, saying Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources could be better harnessed for national development.
Ogunkanmi further called for greater accountability and responsiveness in governance, stressing that elected leaders must remain conscious that political power is entrusted to them by the people.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country, noting that building a prosperous nation requires responsible leadership, active citizenship and a collective commitment to development.
He congratulated Nigerians on the 66th anniversary and prayed for peace, unity, prosperity and a better future for the country.
