Post-Election Jubilation: Osun Police Warn Against Violence, Reckless Celebrations

The Osun State Police Command has urged residents celebrating the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election to do so peacefully and responsibly, warning against any act capable of threatening lives, property and public safety.

The Command, in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, congratulated residents on the successful conclusion of the election and acknowledged their right to express joy over the outcome.

However, the police cautioned that such celebrations must be conducted within the bounds of the law and should not infringe on the rights or safety of other citizens.

The Commissioner of Police (Election), CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, urged supporters of all political parties, particularly those celebrating victory, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could result in injuries, destruction of property, traffic obstruction, harassment or confrontation with political opponents.

The Command specifically warned residents against reckless driving, shooting firearms or fireworks, brandishing dangerous weapons, destruction of public or private property and violent street processions.

It also cautioned celebrants against provocative acts or attacks on supporters of opposing political parties.

The police called on parents, guardians, political leaders, religious leaders, traditional and community leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to caution their followers and ensure that post-election celebrations remained peaceful and orderly.

According to the Command, the police and other security agencies have been strategically deployed across the state to maintain law and order during the post-election period.

It warned that anyone who attempts to exploit the celebrations to commit crimes or cause public disorder would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Command reassured residents that their safety remained its top priority, urging them to respect one another while celebrating the election outcome.

“Citizens are encouraged to celebrate responsibly, respect one another, and remember that no political victory is worth the loss of a life or destruction of property,” the statement said.

The police consequently wished residents a peaceful and safe celebration following the conclusion of the governorship election.
