UNIOSUN Matriculates 12,000 Freshers As VC Warns Against Social Vices, Misuse Of Social Media
The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, has warned newly admitted students to avoid anything that will bring disrepute to the university.
Adebooye gave the warning in Osogbo during the institution’s 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony for newly admitted students in all her campuses, which saw 12,000 students took the matriculation oath.
He charged freshers to uphold integrity, discipline, and academic excellence throughout their stay in the institution.
Addressing the matriculating students on Thursday at the Main Campus Osogbo, Prof. Adebooye warmly welcomed them into what he described as a thriving academic community with 17 faculties and 118 fully accredited bachelor’s degree programmes.
He noted that the 2025/2026 session remains a remarkable year for the university, as 41,000 candidates applied for admission, out of which only about 12,000 were offered spaces, representing roughly 30 percent of total applicants.
“You are among the successful 30 percent of those who aspired to join us, but you must not take this for granted. You are here to prove yourselves through hard work, discipline and commitment,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that UNIOSUN, established in 2007, now boasts a student population of about 42,000 across its campuses. He reiterated the institution’s strict standards, emphasizing zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, indiscipline, improper dressing, fraud, and destruction of university property. He instructed freshers to maintain neat dressing, avoid tattered jeans, and behave responsibly at all times.
Prof. Adebooye also cautioned students about the misuse of social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and WhatsApp. He warned against posting negative content about the university, describing it as an act of self-demarketing.
“Each time you post anything negative about this university, you are demarketing yourself, When issues arise, contact the appropriate university officials instead of recording or sharing them online. Preserve the integrity and good name of this institution,” he said.
Speaking on welfare and financial support, the VC encouraged students facing hardship to take advantage of various opportunities available. He urged them to apply for the National Education Loan Fund, describing it as a significant federal intervention for Nigerian university students.
He also noted that UNIOSUN runs several work–study programmes, enabling students to earn income by assisting in the library, offices, and other designated areas. Additionally, the university offers over 300 scholarships, alongside external scholarship opportunities open to qualified students.
Prof. Adebooye further announced that 2025 marks a special season for the institution, as the university has recently commissioned several projects. He added that in the coming weeks, UNIOSUN will unveil its ultra-modern Medical Research and Training Hospital, donated by the duo Modupe Alakija and Folorunsho Alakija (The Chancellor) describing it as a major boost to academic and healthcare development.
In his message to parents and guardians, the Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude for entrusting their wards to the institution. He assured them that UNIOSUN remains committed to providing the best learning environment, supported by dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff.
“We are proud of ourselves because we achieve what many institutions cannot, your wards are in safe hands, and we are here to support their success.” he said.
