AFCON 2025: Tragedy As Stadium Worker Dies During Cleaning Duty
With just weeks to the kickoff of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, tragedy has struck at one of the host venues, leaving the Local Organizing Committee in mourning.
A young cleaning worker reportedly lost his life at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier after falling from a significant height while performing routine cleaning duties on the stadium’s outer glass façade.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the worker slipped from the scaffolding, despite wearing a safety harness.
Medical personnel rushed to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with preliminary reports pointing to possible equipment failure or inadequate safety measures.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over Morocco’s preparations for the continental tournament, scheduled to begin in early 2025.
In a statement, the Local Organizing Committee expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extended condolences to the worker’s family, and promised full support along with a thorough inquiry.
