The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), CN Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma, has been found dead in his hotel room in Calabar.

According to a statement by the Agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

The late Commander, who was recently appointed and posted to lead the Cross River Command, resumed duty on August 18 and was temporarily staying at a hotel while awaiting permanent accommodation.

Babafemi revealed that officers became concerned when Uzoma failed to appear for a scheduled operation by 9 a.m. on Thursday. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach him via phone, his team, accompanied by hotel staff, proceeded to his room.

When repeated knocks yielded no response, hotel attendants gained entry through the ceiling and found the commander’s lifeless body inside.

The State Police Command was immediately notified, and the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene. Investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.

In response, NDLEA Chairman Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) has directed the Zonal Commander, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar to assist with the probe.

Marwa expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for God’s comfort and eternal rest for the departed.
