Ondo Youths Protest, Demand Removal Of INEC REC

Youths numbering about 50 on Wednesday stormed the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akure, Ondo State capital protesting and demanding the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola.

The REC was alleged to be associating with some political parties, ahead of the November 16 governorship Election in the state.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the youths described the allegations against the REC as unhealthy and unprofessional which could undermine the electoral process.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, Olawale Ijanusi, accused the REC of romancing with some political parties in the state.

He advised the REC to desist if it is true.

The Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Biodun Amosu, who addressed the youths commended the youths for ensuring the protest was peaceful.

He gave assurance that the Chairman of INEC will handle the matter, adding that the election will be credible.

“We can assure you that once you have your agents in your polling booth, you man your votes, you protect your votes, nothing can happen,” he stated.

“With the calibre of officers here, we can assure you, will always work to ensure that our votes count. Please, be with us, work with us, let us work together.”
