The ancient town of Iwo, in Osun State experienced something unusual on Saturday when some protesters stormed the Palace of Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale-Akanbi with a coffin!

The protesters were said to be  protesting about the Aro chieftaincy title of the town where they accused the monarch of ‘underhand dealing’ over the chieftaincy title.

The Aro chieftaincy title was said to be one of the powerful kingmakers of the ancient town.

Our correspondent, however, learnt that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale-Akanbi was  trying to install one Paje from Aro Bode area while those from Aro Olukotun whom sources said have been traditionally nominating Aro objected to it.

It was further gathered that the people from Aro Olukotun claimed that Paje is not from their compound and also alleged that Paje is an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and has been getting support of politicians in the town.

Our correspondent also learnt that there has been silent war between the palace and Aro compound as regards the chieftaincy title.

Although policemen deployed to the scene later removed the coffin and the Oluwo, Oba Akanbi later addressed the protesters inside the palace.

At the time of filing  this report, normalcy  was said to have returned to the town.

When contacted on phone, Oba Akanbi told newsmen that the protesters were from the family of the immediate past Aro of Iwo, stating that the move was aimed at intimidating him.

The monarch who confirmed that a corpse was brought to the palace, said that there was no way another Aro could emerge from the same family that produced the last one that reigned.

He, however, urged residents not to panic, assuring them that all is being done to ensure peace and justice in the town.
